Winter Camping

Tenting in the snow - better build a quinzee!

This trip is for those people who don't want "no sissy hotel"! This is the real thing! We are off in the woods, sleeping in tents or "quinzees", with only a fire to keep us warm. It's definitely not everyone's idea of a holiday but, for those of us who do enjoy the challenge, you get a deep feeling of satisfaction of knowing that you beat "old man winter" at his worst!

During the day we enjoy ourselves by going cross country skiing or snowshoeing. In the evening we all work together to get dinner going - some of us are in charge of collecting firewood, others are set the task of making water (melting snow!), while a few trusted individuals actually cook our meals in the sub zero temperatures. No need to worry about who does dishes - we just let them freeze and then scrape them clean!! Your mother might not approve....

Our group of happy winter campers!

If this sort of "roughing it" appeals to you then you will enjoy this trip. This year we are heading out onto an island in Georgian Bay. We will have to cross country ski several kilometres across the lake so, obviously, the trip is very weather dependant. But at that time of the year the ice should be nearly a metre thick!
